Midttrafik is currently investigating the possibilities for the establishment of a light rail transit network in the Aarhus area. The project comprises a number of potential stages connecting the towns of Eastern Jutland.

The first stage of the LRT comprises a connection of the two existing local railways Odderbanen and Grenaabanen and the construction of 12 km of new light rails. The new rails will go from Grenaabanen at Nørreport in Aarhus city along Randersvej via Aarhus University Hospital in Skejby and through the new urban development area in Lisbjerg. From here the LRT will be reconnected to Grenaabanen southeast of Lystrup.

The fundamental work and planning is carried out in a close cooperation between the Municipality of Aarhus and the main part of the involved municipalities in Eastern Jutland (Randers, Favrskov, Norddjurs, Syddjurs, Silkeborg, Skanderborg and Odder), Central Denmark Region and the regional public transport authority, Midttrafik.
Also the Danish state has actively entered the project. In the State Budget for 2007 it was decided that the state will contribute to the detailed investigations and in January 2009 a large majority of the Folketing (the Danish Parliament) decided to dedicate DKK 500 million to the LRT project as part of a green transport policy.
