Rolling stock

The present rolling stock is not suitable for joint operation between the Odder- and Grenaabanen, as the Danish MR-trains in operation on Grenaabanen accelerate too slowly to serve on Odderbanen with its many stops, and the Danish Y-trains have a maximum speed of 75 km/h only, and on certain stretches on  Grenaabanen it is possible to run 100 km/h. Therefore new rolling stock is needed to carry out the joint operation.

The ambition is that the selected trains must be able to operate on both electricity and diesel. Through city areas the LRT trains will be electrically powered by overhead wires, while the LRT trains on the existing line sections Århus H - Grenaa via Risskov and Tranbjerg - Odder will be powered by electricity provided by the trains' diesel generator.

The reason for not electrifying the entire first stage of the LRT system is that this will constitute a considerable cost increase, making the project uneconomic.

Stage 1 stretches powered by diesel and electricity, respectively

In connection with the purchase of LRT trains it will be considered whether some of the trains should be bought as solely electrically powered trams for use only on the lines running between Århus H and Lystrup. Solely electrically powered trains usually have a maximum speed of 70 km/h, but are lighter and cheaper than the LRT trains necessary to serve the existing railways.
